River Avon

Avoncliffe - Limpley Stoke

New for the 2019/20 season, the club has successfully secured this iconic stretch of the Bristol Avon. A varied stretch of water holding a vast array of species to specimen weights. Species include, Barbel to double figures, Chub, Bream, Roach and Perch all to good sizes and a good head of Pike to double figures.

Two points of access to reach this water. From the A36 Warminster to Bath road, turn right onto the B3108 towards Bradford-on-Avon at the Viaduct traffic lights. Follow this road and pass under the railway bridge, cross over the river bridge and park in the lay-by on the left.

Walk across the weir field, down a track to the river bank which continues upstream to just below the next weir at Avoncliff approx. 3 miles in total. To reach the upper end of the waters continue up Winsley Hill from Limpley Stoke bridge, at the top of the hill turn right into Winsley village then turn right at the signpost for Turleigh. Follow this lane for one and a half miles then turn a sharp right for Avoncliff (no through road). A car park will be found alongside the canal basin and aqueduct. Access to the water is via the steps at the rear of the railway halt.

THE WEIR POOL AT AVONCLIFF IS PRIVATE AND NOT WDAC WATERS. FISHING STARTS AT THE FENCE JUST TO THE LEFT OF THE ACCESS POINT.

The river is divided into 4 main areas. Area 1 is from Avoncliff Weir to the fence just below the railway bridge. Area 2 is from the railway bridge to opposite the outfall of the Freshford Sewerage Works. Area 3 is from the outfall to just above Limpley Stoke Weir. Area 4 is the weir field, the banks here are very steep use extreme caution.
