Newsletter August 2018

Welcome to the 2nd. Club newsletter covering July/August.

Seniors Match:  Fished at Crockerton lake July 2018. Roger Lee won top honours with 11lb-4oz followed by Brian Trim tipping the scales with 10lb-4oz. Fishing was hard going but all those that attended enjoyed the day. Heading the leader board after 2 matches is Roger Lee closely followed by Trevor Curtis. Next match 7th August 2019. Draw 9.00 hrs.

The funeral of Stan Curtis took place on the 4th.July which was well attended by his family and members of his much loved angling club WDAC. R.I.P. Stan ‘gone but not forgotten’

Stan’s Legacy: The collection at the funeral of Stan Curtis was amazing, it exceeded all expectations. The money raised will be dedicated to people of all ages who would like to try fishing for the fist time without going to the expense of having to buy kit. If you or your children would like to learn to fish then give Rich Curtis a call on 07506054803.

28th July saw the 24hour ‘Fish-In’ at Crockerton lake. The programme was for 6 youngsters to take part in a 24 hour fish-in experience but due to the bad weather only 3 braved the elements .Thanks to the Clubs instructors…Geoff Scane, Carl Flack and Fester for their time and efforts in giving the lads expert tuition.

Seniors match:  7th August 2018 Crockerton lake.

This was the 3rd match in our Seniors series with 11 anglers contesting a difficult day on the ‘Croc’. Again the bream were not showing so it was down to waggler fishing for the smaller silvers. Once again it was Roger Lee who took top honours weighing in with 12lb-5oz followed by Dave Trippick tipping the scales with 8lb. Roger leads the series with 24lb-10oz with 2 more matches to go. Well done to all those that attended. Next match 4th September. Draw 9.00am

B.A.R.T. had started the habitat improvements and bank work on our stretch of the River Frome. It is well worth the visit as you will see vast improvements to our fishery. Richard Curtis and myself did 3 evening sessions fishing in newly created swims and we were rewarded with Chub to 3lb plus and a Roach tipping the scales at just over 2lb.

Stan’s Peg: A new platform was erected during August in memory of the ‘Late Stanley Curtis’.Many thanks to committee members Rob Trim and Richard Chalmers for their hard work in constructing the platform positioned on Peg 7 ( Stan’s favourite swim) at Crockerton lake.

Witham Friary: Work has started at the Witham complex thanks to the grant awarded to Mere Angling Club. Swims have been cleared ready for the platforms to be position around the small lake, 3 of which will be built with the disabled angler in mind. A position for the toilets has been agreed with the Land owner along with the exact site for the new car park. Easy access from the car park to the disabled platforms will be put in place.

The 2018/19 Season tickets started selling at Steve’s Tackle shop on June 16th, with 227 being issued up to the end of August. It is very encouraging to see anglers joining us for the first time, which I believe is down to our outstanding venues on offer along with a strong committee determined to take this Club to the highest level. There has been a few changes in the structure of the committee with Alan Cross taking over the duties of Secretary and Joe Emmitt to run our Web-site as our IT Manager.2 members have stepped down, In Gruncell and Richard McCormick, due to work commitments. New committee members Chris Morgan and Carl Flack have already demonstrated the importance of the right people serving the committee.

Witham Friary: After a slow start on both lakes, it is now producing good size carp from the top lake, with tench and crucians coming out of the small lake. Fishing has been made more accessible with the introduction of platforms around the small lake. When all the work is completed there will be a total of 11 platforms, 3 of these being disabled friendly, car parking on hardstanding for 10 vehicles and 2 toilets, one designed with the disabled angler in mind.
